Happy Sunday!
Numbers 14:28 says, "So tell them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say:"(NIV). What is God going to do? What is He talking about here? It may help us to go back and read the previous verses to fully understand what is happening. Moses has sent out 12 scouts or spies to go into the Promised Land. When they return, they report that what God said was TRUE! The Land is flowing with milk, and honey! It's a great land, BUT 10 of the spies give an evil report. Their evil report created doubt and fear in the hearts of the Israelites, and they murmured and complained. Numbers 14:2-3 say, "The Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron. All the people came together and said to Moses and Aaron, “We should have died in Egypt or in the desert. Did the Lord bring us to this new land to be killed in war? The enemy will kill us and take our wives and children! It would be better for us to go back to Egypt.”(Easy-to-Read Version). WOW! So this is what God was promising to do! He was going to make their words come to pass. They were going to have exactly what they said!
Matthew 12:36 says, "But I say unto you, That every IDLE WORD that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment."(KJV). Words are vitally important! Our words carry great weight. Verse 37 of the same chapter says, "For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."(KJV). OUCH! Just in case we miss the meaning, or have any questions, another translation of these scriptures says, "Let me tell you something: Every one of these careless words is going to come back to haunt you. There will be a time of Reckoning. Words are powerful; take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can also be your damnation."(Message).
Man was given dominion in the earth. Genesis 2:19 says, "And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof."(KJV). Don't miss this! God created the creatures, but he gave Adam the authority to name them. This scripture says, "and whatever he called them, that was their name."(Living Bible). OK, I know what you may be thinking. Cynthia we already know this, why is this important today? I'm so glad you asked! We can imagine Adam easily having dominion over a cat or a dog. But how would Adam have dominion over a rhino or an elephant. If an elephant decided to trample the garden, how would Adam stop him? I'll give you a minute. He would stop them with his WORDS! Of course, Adam was the perfect human specimen, but even if he was as tall as Andre the Giant, or as strong as Hercules...he would need help. The Apostle James echoed this sentiment in James 3:7-9, "Men have trained, or can train, every kind of animal or bird that lives and every kind of reptile and fish, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is always ready to pour out its deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our heavenly Father, and sometimes it breaks out into curses against men who are made like God."(Living Bible).
Don't be tricked by the enemy! Don't take this lightly! The enemy wants you to think your words are unimportant, and ineffective. But every word we speak is creative: either creating good things or creating evil things. If you wake up tomorrow and declare that it's going to be a bad day, trust me...for YOU it will be a bad day. But even if bad things are happening all around you, there is still the possibility for you to have a great day! Our parents used to tell us, "If you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all!" We would do well to say as the psalmist, "Help me, Lord, to keep my mouth shut and my lips sealed."(Psalm 141:3, Living Bible).

True Love
Happy Sunday!
One of my favorite movies is "Sleepless in Seattle". Who knew movies were travel marketing propaganda? LOL! Anyway, this week I'm in Seattle celebrating my 52nd Birthday! Seeing the sites, and taking a good nap are special items on my agenda. If you have never seen the movie, it's a sappy love story. A good man, yes, they do exist...has lost the love of his life. He leaves Chicago to get away from the memories of his wonderful wife. He wants to get far away, and chooses Seattle. His young son sees that he is unhappy and calls a radio talk show on Christmas Eve to tell the host his father needs a new wife! One of the many women listening to the talk show eventually meets him on top of the Empire State Building and they live happily ever after. Well that's at least the ending we create in our minds. One of my favorite quotes from the movie is when Annie's friend Becky says, "You don't want to be in Love. You want to be in Love in a movie." Ain't it the truth! We say we want love and to be loved, but really we want it to be clean, and neat, and orderly. Love can be messy!
The Word tells us, "Ask God to bless the people who ask for bad things to happen to you. Pray for the people who are mean to you."(Easy-to-Read Version). OUCH! Really, God? You want me to love people that are out to get me, want to harm me, and hate me for no good reason? YES! Love them too! King David wrote, "Even my best friend, the one I always told everything —he ate meals at my house all the time!—has bitten my hand."(Psalm 41:9, Message). We are commanded to love everyone. 1 John 4:7-8 says, "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love."(KJV). Another translation of these verses says, "Dear friends, let us practice loving each other, for love comes from God and those who are loving and kind show that they are the children of God, and that they are getting to know him better. BUT if a person ISN'T loving and kind, it shows that he DOESN'T know God—for God is love."(Living Bible).
Well, perhaps we should examine what this Love is all about. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 are familiar scriptures, you may have even had them read at your wedding, or want them to be read at your wedding in the future. But beware, these scriptures describe true love! They set the bar pretty high, and sadly many of us have missed it! In the Living Bible Translation these scriptures say, "Love is very patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never boastful or proud, never haughty or selfish or rude. Love does not demand its own way. It is not irritable or touchy. It does not hold grudges and will hardly even notice when others do it wrong. It is never glad about injustice, but rejoices whenever truth wins out. If you love someone, you will be loyal to him no matter what the cost. You will always believe in him, always expect the best of him, and always stand your ground in defending him". Personally, I'm working to just get past the first phrase, "very patient". I want results, and I want them now! But love demands that I give people time to mature, and grow. Love requires that I see people as God sees them. Jesus cried, "Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Murderer of prophets! Killer of the ones who brought you God’s news! How often I’ve ached to embrace your children, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you wouldn’t let me."(Matthew 23:37, Message). Jesus even had to be patient with the people he came to save. But aren't we glad he is patient! 2 Peter 3:9 says, "He isn’t really being slow about his promised return, even though it sometimes seems that way. But he is waiting, for the good reason that he is not willing that any should perish, and he is giving more time for sinners to repent."(Living Bible).

Organized...
Happy Sunday!
Dr. Bill Winston said, "God will Supernaturally add to your life as you are sufficiently ORGANIZED to continue".
John 6:3-13 tells the story of the feeding of the 5000. It was probably more like 20,000 because in those days the women and children were left out of the count. We've read this scripture many, many times. But lets notice something that we may have overlooked. Jesus asked Philip where could they buy enough bread to feed the people. The disciples went into panic mode. In verse 7, "Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a BITE!”(NIV). Today, let's focus on verse 6, it says, "He asked this only to TEST him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.(NIV). Don't miss this! Jesus already knew how he was going to feed the multitude, but he was testing or proving his disciples. Why would Jesus want to test his disciples? Great question! I'm so happy you asked! Jesus was the greatest leader that has ever walked on earth. If you are a Christian, His leadership is still at work in you, in the earth, after thousands of years. His leadership team had to put their FAITH training into practice. Even on your job, there are evaluation processes. Whether yearly, or monthly, your management wants to know if you really get it! Do you understand the goals and culture of the business? Are you willing to do what it takes to help this company succeed? If not, perhaps this position is not for you.
God is the God of Unlimited Potential! When you sign on to this team you must know that there is abundance and no lack! God wants your needs to be met without you leaving your assignment! If he called you to be a missionary to Zimbabwe, he doesn't want you to give up on that dream just because your corporate benefits are more attractive. If he called you to be the CEO of a Fortune 500 Company, he doesn't intend for you to leave it just to prove you are a good person and can be a missionary. God made you unique! He knows what makes you tick! He knows what you enjoy doing and what you do best! He also knows the workplace is a fertile mission field. The Apostle Paul said it like this, "Servants, do what you’re told by your earthly masters. And don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God, confident that you’ll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind always that the ultimate Master you’re serving is Christ. The sullen servant who does shoddy work will be held responsible. Being a follower of Jesus doesn’t cover up bad work."(Colossians 3:22-25, Message).
John 6:10 says, "And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand."(KJV). Thousands of hungry people all trying to get the little boys fish dinner, could have caused a stampede! Jesus knew what to do! He organized the process. Dr. Bill Winston said, " Order produces the desired result. You are only as organized as the unsupervised areas of your life!" Take a moment to let that sink in. Unsupervised area? Perhaps it's your closet. When I was younger, my mother was a representative for Queen's Way to Fashion. The company brought clothes to women's homes for them to try on, and order. In the same manner that a Queen would shop. Of course you know the Queen wouldn't be caught shopping in the Galleria, or your favorite mall. My mother also educated customers about organizing their closets. Many times, she would find that the women would have duplicates of the same pieces. If they were like me and liked Black pants, an examination of their closet would reveal several pairs of Black Pants. She would encourage them, and show them how a few new pieces could expand the wardrobe they already possessed. The money they save by being organized could be used elsewhere. Think about debt. If you have no idea who you owe, and how much you owe, how are you going to pray or pay? Are you going to say, "Ok, God...I think a million dollars will be enough"? Sweetheart, I could spend a million dollars in one day! The houses in my area are going for $500,000 and up, a nice vehicle comfortable for a tall woman could run $170,000. That's an S600 Mercedes, just in case you want to get me one for my birthday! LOL! So organization is imperative! Proverbs 24:30 says, "I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;"(KJV), Just in case you don't know what "slothful" is, here's another translation. The Voice translation says, "Once I passed by the property of a slacker, by the vineyard of a foolish man". OUCH! A slacker, a fool? Don't be that person!
Mikael Cho wrote an article entitled, "Clutter’s Impact on Your Brain". Here's an excerpt..."Whether it be your closet or office desk, excess things in your surroundings can have a negative impact on your ability to focus and process information. That’s exactly what neuroscientists at Princeton University found when they looked at people’s task performance in an organized versus disorganized environment. The results of the study showed that physical clutter in your surroundings COMPETES for your attention, resulting in decreased performance and increased stress. A team of UCLA researchers recently observed 32 Los Angeles families and found that all of the mothers’ stress hormones spiked during the time they spent dealing with their belongings. Similar to what multitasking does to your brain, physical clutter overloads your senses, making you feel stressed, and impairs your ability to think CREATIVELY." Looks like the Bible was on to something..."Just maintain the proper order in all things."(1 Corinthians 14:40, Voice).

Be Strong, Be Courageous
Happy Sunday!
There is so much in this world that can be used by the enemy to cause fear! The daily news, the political news, the economic news, and even family news can send us reeling if we allow it to! How does God expect us to get through this life? Great question! I'm so happy you asked! God intends for us to Reign in life through Christ Jesus! We are to be full of joy and always on top! God is Jehovah Jireh! That name identifies Him as the God who sees beforehand and provides! God is not running around frantically in heaven ringing his hands and trying figure out how to get your light bill paid! He's not amazed by the political climate, and he was not caught off guard when they did what they did at your job! God has provided for your every need!
Dr. Dennis Burke was our guest speaker today! Dr. Bill Winston and the team are away ministering in South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda this week. Dr. Burke's message was entitled, "Courage and the Power of Encouragement". The Book of Joshua begins with a very depressing statement! God tells Joshua, "Moses my servant is dead".(vs 2, KJV). OUCH! But before you think surely God will give Joshua more time off to deal with his loss, he makes the next statement! "Cross this Jordan River, you and all the people. Cross to the country I’m giving to the People of Israel. I’m giving you every square inch of the land you set your foot on—just as I promised Moses."(vs 2, Message). What? You mean even though things are not working out as we dreamed they would, we have to go on? Yes, we do! In verse 6, God tells Joshua how to do it..."Be strong and of a good courage".(KJV). We know that God never asks us to do anything that we are incapable of doing! If he says do it, it is possible, and it is possible for us! In verse 7, He reiterates..."Always be strong and courageous, and always live by all of the law I gave to my servant Moses, never turning from it—even ever so slightly—so that you may succeed wherever you go."(Voice).
The definition of Courage is "strength in the face of pain or grief" and "mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty". The root word for courage is "coer" or "cor", which means heart. Strength and Courage come from within. OK, I know what you may be thinking! How can it come from within? I don't think I have any! Joshua 1:8 helps us understand how to get strength and courage in our hearts. It says, "Let the words from the book of the law be always on your lips. Meditate on them day and night so that you may be careful to live by all that is written in it. If you do, as you make your way through this world, you will prosper and ALWAYS find success."(Voice). Did you get that? Meditating on the Word of God, and living by the Word guarantee success and builds courage! We must see the Word as God's Word to us! If the Bible is a just casual read, or a decoration on your coffee table, Courage may be difficult for you. You have to see the Word as the title deed, or the receipt for all that God has promised. Joshua had seen the miracles in the wilderness. He'd seen ALL the unbeliever's drop dead in the wilderness, and he'd seen that God was faithful and trustworthy.
Even when we meditate on the Word, and live in the Word, we may need encouragement! We have excellent examples in the Word. David had to "encourage himself" at times.(1 Samuel 30:6; Psalm 103). Barnabas was called the "Son of Encouragement" because he went out of his way to encourage others in the Faith.(Acts 4:36). The writer of Hebrews also said, "So, brothers and sisters, be careful that none of you has the evil thoughts that cause so much doubt that you stop following the living God. But ENCOURAGE each other every day, while you still have something called “today”. HELP each other so that none of you will be fooled by sin and become too hard to CHANGE.(Hebrews 3:12-13, Easy-to-Read Version).
Let the Holy Spirit lead you and never miss an opportunity to encourage others! A kind word, a thoughtful gesture, and even a smile can go along way when a person is discouraged!
