Happy Sunday!
Dr. G. Thomas Turner, Sr., Pastor of the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio was our guest speaker today. He preached, "The God I Know". He used Genesis 1:1, John 1:1, and 2 Timothy 1:12 as reference scriptures.
Dr. Turner recounted a conversation with a young member of his congregation. The young person asked him, "Who Created God?"
Genesis 1:1 says, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." The Hebrew word used for God in this scripture is "ELOHIM". Elohim means Creator and Sustainer of all. Elohim is plural and masculine, and represents eternal existence. John 1:1-3 says, "In the beginning was the Word(Jesus), and the Word(Jesus) was with God, and the Word(Jesus) was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made." (King James Version)
In Exodus 3:14, Moses asked God what he should say to Pharaoh, "God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am." In the New Testament, after a spirited discussion with the Jewish Leaders, Jesus said, " Before Abraham was, I AM." John 8:58 ( King James Version) This comment caused the crowd to pick up stones and attempt to stone Jesus to death, but he disappeared into the crowd.
Our relationship with God is based on faith. 2 Corinthians 5:7 says, "For we walk by faith, not by sight." Hebrews 11:1 says, "The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd." (Message Translation)
Hebrews 11:6 says, "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." John 4:24 says, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." (King James Version)
Dr. Turner told a story about a young man returning home after finishing college. His mother fell to her knees and began to pray and thank God for all he'd done for her son. The son told his mother, he didn't believe in God and he didn't believe in anything he couldn't see. His mother was heartbroken. Later that night, the mother heard the son crying in pain. She went to his room and asked what was the matter. He cried, "I have a toothache!" She said, "Son, are you sure it's a toothache? Can you see it?" Psalm 14:1 says, "The wicked and foolish man truly believes there is no God." (Voice Translation)
Dr. Turner said, "In Nature, God is above man. In providence, God is beyond man. In Law, God is against the sin of man. In Grace, God is for man."
Love and prayers, Cynthia
