No Comparison

Happy Sunday!

2 Corinthians 10:12 says, "Oh, don’t worry; we wouldn’t dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant!"(New Living Translation).   Don't miss this!  Comparing ourselves to other people is stupid!  Jesus is the example, the blueprint!  Another human being should never be our measurement.  They may be inspiring, and there may be things we can learn from them.  But God designed each of us uniquely.  You have something to contribute to the society that differs from what I have to contribute.

Knowing who we are in Christ is a major way to stay away from comparing.  When you can truly understand that God loves you and has a great plan for your life it gets easier.

Dr. Bill Winston continued the series, "Christ in You", with the subtitle, "The Greater Works".  He reminded us we have been empowered to reign.  Romans 5:17 says, "For if because of one man’s trespass (lapse, offense) death reigned through that one, much more surely will those who receive [God’s] overflowing grace (unmerited favor) and the free gift of righteousness [putting them into right standing with Himself] REIGN as Kings in life through the one Man Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One)."(Amplified).   In order to reign in life, we need to get back to the BOOK, the Bible!  I appreciate my Baptist upbringing.  Scripture memorization, Bible Study, and Vacation Bible School all helped to get the Word into my soul.  But it doesn't stop there!  Daily meditation on the Word, even one scripture can provide guidance, comfort, and insight into what to do in this life.  There are Bible Apps that can remind you to read, and there are ministry apps that send encouraging quotes.  There are Podcasts, Web Sites, and YouTube Videos.  In this technological age, there is really no excuse for ignorance of the Word.

Life can be hard, busy and complicated.  There are days when it would just be easier to stay in bed.  But we have been commanded to GO!  Matthew 28:19 says, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:"(KJV).  We have to do our part to change our families, our communities, and our world.

Transition

Happy Sunday!

Every new move begins in the womb of the old. - Dr. Matthew L. Stevenson III.

Change.  This word can bring fear and trepidation to most of us!  My employer says, "Change energizes us".   We may not agree about it energizing us, but we know that change is inevitable.  Personally, I haven't always responded well to change.  The old way gets comfortable, and I like comfort.  Don't you?

Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:"(KJV).  Don't miss this!  There are more seasons than Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall!  There are seasons, and purposes, and changes we must endure in this life.  Dr. Matthew L. Stevenson continued his "Under Cover" series with a sermon about, "Transition".  Transition is scary, and sometimes uncomfortable because we don't know every detail about what the future holds.  But as the saints say, "We know WHO holds the future".

As we move toward the future, and the changes that are necessary, we must Honor the seasons and places we have already experienced.  Jesus didn't start his earthly ministry until after he was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River.  John the Baptist realized that change was coming.  He said, "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. But he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: (Matthew 3:11, KJV).  He understood that his purpose was to prepare the way for the Messiah as prophesied in Isaiah 40:3.  Later after Jesus' ministry was in full bloom, and John the Baptist was in prison for speaking the truth, John sent his disciples to ask Jesus a few questions.  "The disciples of John the Baptist soon heard of all that Jesus was doing. When they told John about it, he sent two of his disciples to Jesus to ask him, “Are you really the Messiah? Or shall we keep on looking for him?”(Luke 7:18-19, Living Bible).

Jesus didn't immediately answer their question.  Luke 7:21 tells what he did, "And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight."(KJV).  Then he turned to John's Disciples and said, "Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached."(Luke 7:22, KJV).   Jesus didn't go into trying to justify who he was.  He let his actions speak for him.  He waited until John's Disciples were gone, then he Honored the one that had gone before him.  John's ministry was different, and Jesus' ministry brought about change.  But Jesus honored John.  In Luke 7:28 he said, "For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."(KJV).

As we face our future, where change is certain and unavoidable, we must not forget where we've been, and those that have helped us along the journey.  Even the hard times, and the seemingly bad events have brought us to this place.  We love Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."(KJV).   But don't miss this!  The scripture did not say all things that happen to us are good.  It says God can make all things work together for our good.

I need thee, O I need thee...

Happy Sunday!

Romans 8:5-8 says, "Those who think they can do it on their OWN end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never get around to exercising it in real life. Those who trust God’s action in them find that God’s Spirit is in them—living and breathing God! Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God. Anyone completely absorbed in self ignores God, ends up thinking more about self than God. That person ignores who God is and what he is doing. And God isn’t pleased at being ignored."(Message).

One of the things I remind God, and also myself in prayer, is that I can't make it on my own.  As the saints sing, "I need thee, O I need thee.  Every hour I need thee.  O bless me now my Savior.  I come to thee".   That's why I appreciate the Word of God.   Daily, the Holy Spirit ensures that I am led to the right scriptures, the right preached messages, and the right correction when necessary.  I wish I were perfect, it would be so much easier.  But until I am perfected, I will continue to allow the Word to wash me.  Ephesians 6:25-26 says, "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,"(KJV).  Don't miss this!  Jesus sanctifies and cleanses us with the washing of the water by the Word!  Zig Ziglar said, “People often say motivation doesn’t last. Neither does bathing—that’s why we recommend it daily".   Prayer, meditation, and study of the Word should be our daily norm.

Our lesson today in Children's Church was entitled, "What is Prayer?".  Prayer is communication with God. Communication is defined as "the imparting or exchanging of information or news".  I immediately thought of my Aunt Sophia, and my cousin, Sonya.  They are dedicated to speaking to each other daily.  They have built an exquisite mother-daughter/friend relationship and strengthen it daily with conversation.  Prayer should be a back and forth conversation with our loving, compassionate Father.  So often, it becomes a ritual, even drudgery.  What if I called you and never allowed you the opportunity to respond to anything I said?  What if I knew you loved me and wanted to spend time with me, but I only contacted you in emergencies or when I needed money?   Is this how we treat God?

Why don't we talk to people?  Why don't we talk to God?  If we examine ourselves, we may get the answer.  Are we hesitant to talk to people after they have hurt, offended, and disappointed us?  Life is hard enough without rehashing old hurts. I know how you feel.  But Jesus said, "Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you."(Luke 6:28, KJV).  Are we not talking to God because things didn't work out as we expected?  Most of us have experienced the loss of a loved one.  We may not say it out loud, but we must admit that we have questioned what God could have done to change the situation.  Many times in my own experience ignorance of the Word has caused my anger toward God.   Communication and conversation are so much easier when we know each other well.  Are we not communicating with God because we really don't know Him?

Lots of things to think about...and pray about.

Patience

Happy Sunday!

2 Peter 3:9 says, "Don’t overlook the obvious here, friends. With God, one day is as good as a thousand years, a thousand years as a day.  God isn’t late with his promise as some measure lateness. He is restraining himself on account of YOU, holding back the End because he doesn’t want anyone lost. He’s giving everyone space and time to CHANGE."(Message).

God is merciful, and patient.  These are also attributes he'd like for us to develop as well.  James 1:2-4 says, "Don’t run from tests and hardships, brothers and sisters. As difficult as they are, you will ultimately find joy in them; if you embrace them, your faith will blossom under pressure and teach you true patience as you endure. And true patience brought on by endurance will equip you to complete the long journey and cross the finish line—mature, complete, and wanting nothing."(Voice).  Don't miss this!  God wants us Mature, Complete, and Wanting Nothing.

The Psalmist wrote, "Oh, how love I Your law! It is my meditation all the day.  You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies, for [Your words] are ever before me.  I have better understanding and deeper insight than all my teachers, because Your testimonies are my meditation."(Psalm 119;97-99, Amplified).  The secret to patience and endurance is meditation on the Word.  The Word of God has everything we need to survive, and thrive.  Proverbs 3:4-8 says, "If you want favor with both God and man, and a reputation for good judgment and common sense, then trust the Lord completely; don’t ever trust yourself.  In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success.  Don’t be conceited, sure of your own wisdom. Instead, trust and reverence the Lord, and turn your back on evil; when you do that, then you will be given renewed health and vitality."(Living Bible).

Dr. Bill Winston mentioned John 2:10 in the Increase Message today.  I've probably told you how much I enjoy this scripture.  Jesus and the Disciples were invited to a wedding.  His mother frantically alerts him that they are out of wine.  Jesus ask her why this should matter to him.  She turns and tells the servants to do whatever he tells them.  The water was turned to wine, the hosts were not embarrassed, and the Master of Ceremonies says, "Everybody I know begins with their finest wines and after the guests have had their fill brings in the cheap stuff.  But you’ve saved the best till NOW!”(Message).  When we are looking at life, and wondering why it's taking so long for this or that to happen...it's comforting to be reminded that God saves the Best for Now!  Hebrews 11:1 echoes this fact, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."(KJV).  The Living Bible translation says, "What is faith? It is the confident assurance that something we want is going to happen. It is the certainty that what we hope for is waiting for us, even though we cannot see it up ahead."

Don't give up!

Patiently waiting.  Love and prayers, Cynthia

Fools...

Happy Sunday!

Psalm 14: 1 says, "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good."(KJV).   Another translation of this scripture says, "That man is a fool who says to himself, “There is no God!” Anyone who talks like that is warped and evil and cannot really be a good person at all."(Living Bible).  That's a pretty scathing description of an unbeliever!  No one wants to be a fool, and hopefully we won't play the fool.

My cousin posted a comment on Facebook this week.  It recounted a conversation she had with a cashier.  She said, "Happy Easter!", then the man said he doesn't celebrate Easter and since it falls on April Fools Day that should tell you that it's not worth celebrating.  Of course, I laughed then commented with the Living Bible version of Psalm 14:1.

We celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and honor him as our Passover Lamb.  In John 1:29, John the Baptist is quoted as saying, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world."(KJV).  The Jewish Passover Celebration or remembrance happens to fall in March or April, and also generally coincides with other festivals and celebrations that have been celebrated for thousands of years, even before Jesus came on the scene.   If you do a search for Easter on the Internet, you will find conflicting opinions.  Some believe that “Easter” is related to the Assyrian goddess Ishtar or the Babylonian goddess Astarte.  Ishtar was worshipped as the the goddess of fertility and immoral sexual activity.   Have you ever wondered why eggs, and bunny rabbits would be associated with the resurrection of Jesus?  Have you ever wondered why Ham would be the main meat on the menu, when Jews don't eat pork?  As the Apostle Paul said many times, "I don't want you to be ignorant!"(Romans 1:13; Romans 11:25; 1 Corinthians 10:1).

The Apostle Paul encouraged his son in the ministry, Timothy by saying, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."(2 Timothy 2:15).  We need to know what we believe and why we believe it.  God is not against thoughtful questions and investigation.  He wants us fully equipped with the information we need to succeed, prosper, and overcome in this life.  I enjoy seeing the reading lists of my friends and family.  Read the Bible, BUT also read other books.  Expand your horizons.  If you are rooted and grounded in the Word, you will be able to weed through any falsehood and glean the truth.

Back to Fools...Jesus encouraged us to never call anyone a fool.  Matthew 5:22 says, "But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire."(KJV).  Don't miss this!  Why would calling my brother a fool put me in danger of hell fire?  Great question!  So glad you asked.  To call someone a fool is to say they have no purpose or reason for living.  That would mean that God created them for nothing, and to be nothing.  My friends, God does not waste effort.  If you made it here and missed abortion, missed being still born, missed being murdered, or dying from a childhood disease at birth...YOU HAVE a Purpose.  There is a reason for your life.  There is something you are meant to do, and no one else on the planet can do it like you can.

Proverbs 1:22 says, "...fools hate knowledge"(KJV).  I'm not going to call you a fool, but I am praying that you won't be foolish.  Proverbs 9:6 encourages us to stay away from the foolish, "Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding."(KJV).  Proverbs 12:15 says, "A fool thinks he needs no advice, but a wise man listens to others."(Living Bible).  Proverbs 12:23 says, "Prudent people don’t flaunt their knowledge; talkative fools broadcast their silliness."(Message).

Celebrating the Resurrected Saviour, Jesus the Christ...
